Washington’s organics management laws require businesses to separate food and yard waste from the garbage. The City of Burien is helping local businesses sign up for composting service by providing business visits and personalized recommendations to right-size their trash and compost service levels.
Participating businesses will also receive onsite training available in multiple languages to help staff compost correctly. Businesses can also receive free supplies such as indoor waste containers for composting, compostable bags and bag dispensers, and posters and stickers to inform customers and staff.
The deadline for businesses to subscribe to composting service depends on how much food and yard waste they generate weekly:
- January 2024: 8 cubic yards or more
- January 2025: 4 cubic yards or more
- January 2026: 96 gallons or more
