Matthew Brandis is well versed in the art of serving others. For more than 20 years, Brandis has served the community as an employee of the Wendy’s restaurant on 1st Avenue South in Burien. In addition to helping fill bellies, Brandis makes sure to take time to fill hearts as well with smiles and friendly conversation.
Brandis has deep roots locally as a longtime resident of the Highline area and as an alumnus of Highline Public Schools. His exceptional qualities of kindness, empathy, and connection which he regularly displays during his interactions with customers have garnered the attention of local media. In the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, when many were experiencing isolation and fear, KOMO News declared Brandis a local hero in July of 2020 for creating an environment “where people feel noticed and appreciated.”
According to a fellow community members’ nomination, Mr. Brandis is “the nicest, kindest, most warm-hearted, and positive man” whose warm smile never fails to uplift others.
Brandis used his acceptance speech as Citizen of the Year to share how a long-time customer who had faced much adversity recently won a large sum of money from a scratch-off lottery game. The customer donated some of her winnings to Brandis to distribute to others in need.
“When [customers] come in and say they came to see me, it’s the best reward you can get, it melts my heart every time, you guys are the reason I stick around and I can’t thank the people of Burien enough,” said Brandis. “I don’t consider you friends; I consider you family because I’ve known some of you for so long.”
