Community Shares Their Strategies and Stories to Shape Burien’s Future

Results of this planning effort will guide policymaking, operational plans, and budgets for the next twenty years.

For the past year and a half, we have been seeking input from our community through the Shape Your City initiative to help re-imagine Burien’s 20-year future. This initiative will guide major updates to our Comprehensive Plan, Parks, Recreation and Open Space (PROS) Plan, and Transportation Master Plan.

Specifically, we are focusing on land use, economic development, human services, environmental protection, infrastructure, transportation, parks and open spaces, recreation programs, public art, and cultural services. Results of this planning effort will guide policymaking, operational plans, and budgets for the next twenty years. It’s vital that community voice guides these important planning processes.

So far, we’ve sought community input through an open house, online surveys, tabling at more than 20 community events, and hosting dozens of small discussion groups with different stakeholders from a wide array of ages, socioeconomic backgrounds, and spoken languages. An advisory group comprised of members of several Burien City Council-appointed advisory boards and commissions are providing in-depth guidance on the Burien 2044 Comprehensive Plan. The Parks and Recreation Advisory Board and Arts Commission have been guiding the development of the PROS Plan.

What’s next?

During the first phase we asked big questions about your vision for Burien’s future. In the second phase, we asked you to drill down and share more specific feedback and stories on housing, neighborhood centers, parks, and transportation. Now, the Shape Your City team, comprised of City staff from multiple departments and consultants, are evaluating that input, and preparing draft plans to present to the community, advisory boards, and City Council for feedback.

The third phase of Shape Your City will launch in mid-fall. You will be asked to provide feedback on drafts of the updated Comprehensive Plan and help prioritize projects and programs to be included in the updated PROS Plan and Transportation Master Plan. We will be launching another online tool to gather input and hosting another open house on December 6, 2023.
