Burien has the largest population of Hondurans in all of Washington. When I went to travel to my parents’ homeland, Honduras, I visited my father’s small hometown. Marale, Honduras is a pueblo, but everyone knows about Burien! This is their hub in the United States. I did not know this prior to traveling to Honduras. I would love to honor my Honduran, and greater Latino community by sharing images that are reminiscent of their motherland. I would like to highlight the traditional vibrant colors of Latino America, found in their architecture, murals, and clothing. I aim to pair this color palette with earth tones and gems associated with Washington. My work highlights the sacrifice of the immigrant community, to come here and provide opportunities for us. They left behind their country in hopes of providing opportunities for their kids. When the driver gets a glimpse of this traffic signal box, I hope they feel they either can be represented by the culture or can relate.
