Our Story Teen Mural

This special mural was created during an eight-week summer program led by Urban Artworks and local police for 15 teens impacted by violence in and around the Alcove at Seahurst Apartments along Ambaum Boulevard in Burien. The teens collaborated with Burien police officers and program staff from Southwest Youth and Family Services’ New Futures to determine the best way to express their perspectives about what their community means to them.  Mural arts teacher Scott Mexcal, spoken-word artist Sasha LaPointe, and assistant teaching artist Natalia Sotelo then helped the teens transform their ideas into a visual format.  This intentional community building between the police officers and teens served to break down barriers and illustrate that collaborations are possible and can positively impact some of our most vulnerable young people.
