Along the sidewalk on Des Moines Memorial Drive are two repeating architectural elements that are part of the World War I memorial. A star shape references “Gold Star mothers”, women who lost a child in combat. Elm leaves are pressed into the side of the star shape, as a reference to the memorial elm trees that at one time lined the whole road. A line of bricks refers to the fact that Des Moines Memorial Drive was at one time a brick-lined highway In Burien, these elements can found on the east side of the road, north of S 128th St and from S 172nd going south on the west side of the road abutting a private housing development.
